Matthew is a craftsman inspired by the beauty of the materials he works with. A true craftsman at heart. Using both traditional and contemporary techniques, each carefully crafted piece reflects a deep appreciation of the aesthetic and a genuine love of handmade objects.
Matthew is experienced with a great variety of timbers from new, recycled, local and imported, as well as a large variety of solid wood veneers, all pressed in-house.
Matthew cares deeply about the source of his materials and, at all times, strives to be responsible, ethical and studious in the selection of them. Core to this is the belief that building items to last a lifetime and endure long into the future is the best way to do justice to the materials and be ecologically responsible.
The road to here
Under the instruction of mastercraftsmen, Matthew completed his apprenticeship at the renowned Fewings joinery in Sydney. World travel and working at some well established joineries in the UK further inspired Matthew to pursue the possibilities of his trade. Gaining knowledge in new technologies, computer design and cutting edge machinery he returned to Sydney to run the Fewings workshop.
From this love of innovation combined with traditional techniques and over 28 years of experience, Matthew Canning Custom Furniture & Joinery was born.
